Joseph-Louis Lagrange Austin Osburn- Hull 7th hour Algebra

Birth and death Joseph- Louis Lagrange was born: January 25, 1736 in Turin, Sardinia- Piedmont which is now called Italy. Lagrange died on: April 10, 1813 in Paris, France.

What he is known for The first two periods were the most fruitful in terms of scientific activity, which began as early as 1754 with the discovery of the calculus of variations and continued with the application of the latter to mechanics in 1756. In a letter to d’Alembert of 2 November 1769 Lagrange confirmed that this method of maxima and minima was the first fruit of his studies—he was only nineteen when he devised it—and that he regarded it as his best work in mathematics.

Where did he learn it all from? On the recommendation of Euler and d’Alembert , in 1766 Lagrange succeeded Euler as the director of mathematics at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin, Prussia, where he stayed for over twenty years, producing a large body of work and winning several prizes of the French Academy of Sciences.

Ways his contribution effected the world today His method of maximum and minimum helps us understand how big or small something is. It not only helps with the size of an object is, it can also be used to measure how big or small a speed something can go or the amount of time spent. There are probably even more ways it can be used.

Example of maximum and minimum in mathematics
