How can there be peace in the Middle East?

Vocabulary Over the next few months, we will be studying the region of Southwest Asia, otherwise known as the Middle East. This region is incredibly rich in both history and culture. For us to fully appreciate what we are going to study we must become familiar with the following vocabulary terms.

Southwest Asia Southwest Asia and Middle East refer to the same region, they are nicknames.

Settlement The building of a town or community in an area previously empty.

Israel A country in the Middle East that is Jewish, surrounded by Arab/Muslim countries.

Palestinians Name of the Muslim community who used to live where Israel now is. Most are now refugees in surrounding areas.

Refugee a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

Arable Land Land that can grow crops

Standard of Living the amount of wealth and things available to a person or community. or or

Petroleum The name for the natural resource that powers cars. Synonym for oil or fossil fields.

Monotheism The belief that there is only one God.

Islam A monotheistic religion with Muhammad as the main prophet and the Quran as its holy book. Quran + Muhammad

Judaism A monotheistic religion with Abraham as the main prophet and the Torah as the holy book. + Torah +

Christianity Bible + Jesus A monotheistic religion that believes Jesus is the son of God for told in the Bible, the holy book from God himself. Bible + Jesus
