Language of Information one Date: Objectives Define and use the techniques seen in the language of information. Be able to compile and report information.

Before warm-up – why is this important Conveying information – that is the skill that the Leaving Cert tests. Once you know something, you must be able to pass that knowledge on. The world depends on this. This is popular in the modern world. It is used online to convey ideas quickly, clearly and easily. Comes up often in L.C. This is the skill used in presenting ideas, which is a key skill used in job interviews and in jobs themselves.

Warm-up: the tone we’re looking for The language of information is clear, precise and takes no sides. It is unbiased and wants to give you the details to make your own decision. Your warm-up task is to choose a hobby and tell me why it is interesting. Use facts, vague numbers and details but DO NOT use the words ‘I think’, ‘In my opinion’ or ‘I believe’. 3-5 points

Going to stress this a lot What this means in this section... Describing the metaphorical beauty of a rainbow is not a good idea in this section.

L.O.I. Checklist – note it down The journalist’s checklist. To effectively analyse an event, you need to ask the following questions: Who, what, why, where, when, how? Task: describe a hobby using the checklist. Who - What - Why - Where- When - How -

L.O.I. Checklist – note it down Clear presentation. Is the information organised in an effective manner so as to be understood by another person. Bullet points allowed. One point per paragraph recommended. Point-evidence-analyse is the structure of paragraphs. Task: list the facilities of the school, their location and purpose (Point – evidence – analysis).

L.O.I. Checklist Are paragraphs simple, short, relevant and without waffle. Do they get directly to the point? Task: shorten these paragraphs to 5-10 words. When Ralph the penguin lost his feathers it looked like he wouldn’t be able to swim with his friends at Marwell Wildlife – until he was fitted for a mini wetsuit to stop him getting sunburn. A group of Chinese women who travelled to South Korea for cosmetic surgery baffled immigration officers on their return home when their new looks did not match their passport photos.

L.O.I. Checklist Are you objective and impartial, not personally for or against what you are examining. Task: List two pros and two cons of getting homework.

L.O.I. Checklist Is there an emphasis on facts, numbers, statistics and details. Evidence must back up points. Homework: A one page report on the school. Use the checklists, journals, the school website and ask questions to human beings. Teachers, pupils, subjects, facilities, activities, transport, food, rules, layout, reward, punishment, etc.
