Chapter 14 Liquifying an Image

Chapter Lessons Use the Liquify tools to distort an image Learn how to freeze and thaw areas Use the mesh feature as you distort an image

Distorting Images Use the Liquify feature to modify images 8 tools in the Liquify feature are available to modify an image 6 distortion tools 2 non-distortion tools

Using the Liquify Feature Use to make parts of an image appear as if it has been melted Apply the Liquify distortions with a brush Modify brush size and pressure

Freezing and Thawing Use the two non-distortion tools for freezing and thawing areas within the image Freezing Protects an area from editing Thawing Thaws a frozen area to permit editing

Use the Liquify Tools to Distort an Image Apply distortions to any rasterized layer Contents of the active layer appear in a large preview window in the Liquify dialog box

Opening the Liquify Dialog Box Select the layer containing the items to distort Click Filter on the Menu bar Click Liquify

Liquify Dialog Box Liquify Tools

Liquify Example Before After Twirl Clockwise Tool Pucker Tool Bloat Tool

Liquify Tools

Warp Tool Example Warped Bottle

Learn How to Freeze and Thaw Areas Use the Freeze and Thaw Tools in the Liquify dialog box to: Freeze areas within an image so that Liquify tools leave them unaffected Thaw frozen areas and then edit them

Freezing Image Areas To selectively freeze areas Paint them with a pointer By default, frozen areas are painted in red A different color for frozen areas can be applied

Purple area is frozen and not affected by distortions to other areas Frozen Image Example Purple area is frozen and not affected by distortions to other areas

Reconstructing Distortions Individual distortions made with the Liquify feature do not appear in the History panel These distortions cannot be undone Use the History panel to delete the effects of an entire Liquify session Reconstruct using one of eight reconstruction modes

Reconstruction Example Before After

Reconstruction Methods Click Revert in the Liquify dialog box Choose the Revert mode, then click Reconstruct in the Liquify dialog box Click the Reconstruct tool, choose the Revert mode, then drag the brush over distorted areas in the Liquify dialog box

Reconstruction Methods Click the Cancel button in the Liquify dialog box Make distortions in the Liquify dialog box, then drag the Liquify state to the Delete current state button on the History panel

Use the Mesh Feature as you Distort an Image Turn on the mesh to see the effects of distortions Definition of the mesh: Series of horizontal and vertical gridlines superimposed on the preview Control the mesh using the View Options section in the Liquify dialog box

Image with Mesh Showing

Changing Mesh Display Modify the appearance of the mesh: Display mesh in another color Display mesh in larger or smaller gridlines

Modified Mesh Display

Visualizing Distortions View gridlines while making distortions Check if symmetrical objects have equally symmetrical distortions

Viewing Distortions Distort imagery with companion layers visible Two methods: Select the Backdrop check box in the Liquify dialog box, then select which layers should be visible with the selected layer Click the highest layer on the Layers panel, click the Layers panel list arrow, then click Merge Visible
