Pascal’s Principle

What does Pascal’s principle state? A change in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted without loss, to all points in the fluid

What is the picture trying to explain? Pressure stays the same on both sides BUT the forces get multiplied on the right because the area is twice as great as the left.

Force/Area = Pressure = Larger Force/Larger Area Hydraulic Systems A force applied to one piston increases the fluid pressure throughout the fluid. If the second piston has a larger surface area, the force is multiplied! Pressure = Force/Area Force/Area = Pressure = Larger Force/Larger Area

What technology uses Pascal’s principle? Hydraulic pumps and other devices Construction machines Car hydraulics Car lifts

Work/Energy Relation Of course, the law of conservation of energy cannot be violated, so the work done on the system must balance the work done by the system. In the hydraulic lift diagram shown on the previous page, the distance over which F1 is applied will be greater than the distance over which F2 is applied, by the exact same ratio as the force multiplier!
