HISTORY It was opened on April 27, 1828 as a collection for scientific study. It is managed by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). ZSL receives no state funding and relies on 'Fellows' , 'Friends' and ‘Member’, entrance fees and sponsorship to generate income. Zoo keeper Zoo volunteers Volunteers help zoo keepers at the zoo. They give one day a week to assist the running of London Zoo and can be recognised by their red sweaters.

Tiger Territory The Sumatran tiger is a rare tiger subspecies that inhabits the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It has been listed as Critically Endangered on the Red List in 2008 as the population was estimated at 441 individuals. The zoo currently owns five tigers.
