Lesson 1: Compute Unit Rate In this lesson, you will learn to compute unit rates for ratios of fractions

Essential Question The essential question (which we will be working with throughout the entire year) is a question that we will see in the beginning of every lesson. The goal is to be able to answer the question after the lesson is complete. Copy the essential question for this lesson into your notes and HIGHLIGHT it!

Words to Know: Unit rate – tells how many units of a quantity there are for 1 unit of another quantity. Ratio – A comparison of two quantities, A and B, that can be written as… a to b      a:b     or    a/b     𝑎 𝑏   Complex Fraction – a fraction with a fraction in the numerator, denominator, or both      (this is another way to show division of fractions)

Do we remember how to compute unit rate from 6th grade? Set up a ratio depending on the situation in the problem Make a proportion using “1” to find unit rate for a quantity Solve the proportion whichever way you prefer Don’t forget to include UNITS!

Let's review a 6th grade unit rate problem... Amy drove to her mother's house, which is 204 miles away. If it took her 3 hours, what was her average speed?

Practice Problem 1 Rachel mixes 3 4 cup of blue paint with 2 3 cup of red paint to make purple paint. She wants to make more paint that is exactly the same color purple. How much blue paint should Rachel mix with 1 cup of red paint?

Practice Problem 2 In 1 4 hour, Ali walks 7 8 mile. What is her unit rate in miles per hour?

Practice Problem 3 Carl’s mother buys 4 5 pound of Rainier cherries for $2.80 and 5 8 pound of Bing cherries for $1.50. Which cherries are more expensive?

Try this one on your own using either method! Ann mixes 1 2 of a cup of cranberry juice with 1 3  of a cup of orange juice. How much cranberry juice should Ann mix with 1 cup of orange juice?
