Marvin Hamlisch: A Brief History Full name: Marvin Frederick Hamlisch Birth date: June 2, 1944 Death date: August 6, 2012 (age 68) Born in Manhatten, NY, to Lilly and Max Hamlisch Considered a child prodigy when he began piano at age 5 In 1951, before he even turned 7, he was accepted into what is now the Juilliard School Pre-College Division

Early Career His first job was a rehearsal pianist for Barbra Streisand on the show Funny Girl He went on to work with other Broadway legends such as Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, and Groucho Marx

Awards He also received other awards, including: -Academy Awards He has won all four major American performing arts awards (Emmys, Grammys, Oscar, and Tonys) for his various works. He is one of only two people to win all four awards, in addition to a Pulitzer Prize. He also received other awards, including: -Academy Awards -Drama Desk Awards -Golden Globes

Marvin Hamlisch’s Works Best known for A Chorus Line (1975) and They’re Playing Our Song (1978) Other theatrical works include: -Seesaw (1973) -Jean Seberg (1983) -Smile (1986) -The Goodbye Girl (1993) -Sweet Smell of Success (2002) -Imaginary Friends (2002) -The Nutty Professor (2012) He also worked on many movie scores and symphony pieces

Marvin’s Music Marvin’s music has a lovely, unique way of being a perfect blend of classical music and contemporary musical theatre. In his theatrical music, he utilizes many instruments and combines them all to create a musical masterpiece.
