The Life of Elijah: The Prophet’s Boldness and Strength 1 Kings 17 01/21/2018

The gospel is a scandal. “Scandal” comes from the Greek word skandalon. It’s an image that refers to something that makes you fall down as you are walking.

53“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man 53“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you” (Jn 6:53) 60 “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” (Jn 6:60)

66 “After this many of his disciples drew back 66 “After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer followed him” (Jn 6:66).

The Boldness of Elijah. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours.

Elijah dared to believe God. 1 As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” (1 Kings 17:1, NIV)

The Secret of Elijah’s Strength. His prayer life. His knowledge of God’s presence.

5 “I will never leave you, I will never forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Elijah was the man he was because he was a man of faith.

5 ... for without me you can do nothing. (John 15:5b) 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Phil 4:13)
