Presentation transcript:

Craig Ravesloot & Andrew Myers How does time use among people with mobility impairments age 18-65 differ from those without impairments? The American Time Use Survey– 2008-2011

Results For people aged 18-65 who report a mobility impairment: Over 40% did not travel during the previous day compared to just over 10% of those without any impairments. Over a third watched 6 or more hours of television compared with less than 10% of those without any impairments. Over 25% spent time on health-related self care compared with less than 5% of those without any impairments.

Policy Implications People with mobility impairments spend a great deal more time at home than those without. A large proportion of people with mobility impairments spend the majority of their waking hours watching TV. The impact of the home and community environment on the developmental course of disability needs further research.

Practice Implications Many people with disabilities have time to do home-based intervention activities at home. Because the majority of people with mobility impairments do not spend any time in health-related self care, they may need some intervention to get ready for self-management.

Consumer Implications There are a lot of potential consumer advocates at home watching TV right now. The majority of people have access to transportation (American Housing Survey) but a large proportion don’t use it daily. Independent Living is more than just living in the community.

Questions to Address What constitutes good balance of time use for people that are not working? Beyond accessibility, what are other housing features affect time use? For people who have become accustomed to being at home, what do they need to venture out into communities?

Charting Time Use 24 segments per slice, 20 minutes per segment, 480 minutes (8 hours) per slice Median activity durations divided into 20 minute intervals Non-independent use of transportation is associated with more time watching TV
