Kansas Common Core Standards Transition Timeline Southwest Plains Regional service Center Dr. Kelly Gillespie December 1, 2010 Superintendents Council

USMRS: Unified Standards Multiple Resource Service (Data base being prepared by KSDE) SBAC: Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (see additional handout) Feedback: Crosswalks and bridging documents : How old and new align

Soft Landing Gradual transition with all aspects of adoption. Introduction of new or aligned items on the summative assessments. Pilot SBAC assessment components. Partner with consortium states, national and regional organizations and state professional organizations. Introduction of instructional resources. Implement USED waiver on modified accountability. Waivers would be granted by USDE for this to happen—we are pursuing waivers as a state and as a consortium of states that adopted common core

Assessment Development Kansas Common Core Standards Transition Timeline Assessment Development 2011 Unchanged 2012 Re-aligned 2013 New item types 2014 Waiver 2015 Implement We do not know yet where the deltas will fall 2012 (Re-aligned—take things out that are NOT in common core) 2013 (Put in new items and have in new format)—working on cut scores 2014 (all new test) Modified Accountability No AYP

Hard Landing Complete adoption delayed until 2014-2015. Transition to new assessments only in formative applications. Review without implementation of new instructional resources. Provide professional development on two tracks. Partner with consortium states, national and regional organizations and state professional organizations. Implement new assessments and accountability in 2015. No waivers…new test in 2014 would be the pilot…cut scores would not be determined
