What are eclipses?

Eclipse: an event in which the shadow of one celestial body falls on another.

Lunar Eclipse: when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon and the shadow of the Earth falls on the moon. sem Please copy this diagram down below your definition

Lunar Eclipse

Moon moves into Earth’s shadow Lunar Eclipse Moon moves into Earth’s shadow this shadow darkens the Moon Can only occur during a full moon About 2-3 per year Last up to 4 hours

Why does the moon look red during a lunar eclipse? As light passes by Earth’s atmosphere, short wavelengths, like blue, are scattered. By the time light finished its trip to the moon, only longer wavelengths, like red, remain. This is why the moon turns red during an eclipse! The color during a lunar eclipse can be anywhere from gray to bright orange, depending on the dust in the atmosphere.

LUNAR ECLIPSE

Solar Eclipse: when the moon comes between the Earth and the sun and the shadow of the moon falls on part of the Earth. sme Please copy this diagram down below your definition

SOLAR ECLIPSE

Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse Moon moves between Earth and Sun Total eclipses rare – only once every 360 years from one location! Moon casts a shadow on part of the Earth Can only occur during a new moon Solar Eclipse

There are two main parts to the shadow during an eclipse:

Umbra - The darkest portion of the shadow. Penumbra - The lighter portion of the shadow.

Types of Solar Eclipses Partial Eclipse Annular Eclipse A thin ring of the sun shows around the moon’s outer edge. The moon is farther from the Earth. Total Eclipse The entire central portion of the sun is blocked out. Only the sun’s corona, or faint atmosphere, is visible. The moon is closer to the Earth. Only part of the sun's surface is blocked out.

Eclipses are predictable!

Why don’t we have an eclipse every full and new moon?
