Haz Mat Incident Considerations Chapter 10 Technical Specialist/ Haz Mat Reference

Technical Specialist/ Haz Mat Reference Session Objectives Understand the roles and responsibilities of Technical Specialist/Haz Mat Reference

Technical Specialist/ Haz Mat Reference Assistant Safety Officer Hazardous Materials

Technical Specialist/Haz Mat Reference Check-in and obtain briefing from the Hazardous Materials Group Supervisor Provide technical support to the Hazardous Materials Group Obtain briefing from the Planning Section Chief Maintain communications and coordinate operations with the Entry Leader

Technical Specialist/Haz Mat Reference Determine PPE compatibility to hazardous materials

Technical Specialist/Haz Mat Reference Provide and interpret environmental monitoring Provide analysis of hazardous material sample Provide technical information for documentation

Technical Specialist/Haz Mat Reference Provide technical information management with public and private agencies Assist Planning Section with projecting the potential environmental effects of the release Maintain Unit Log

Haz Mat Scenario #2 For scenario #2 use the CSTI map of Santa Luisa and place the incident in the railyard. It is helpful to make a transparency of the map and show it while the scenario is going. You can also make the plume build as the scenario goes on (draw the plume on the transparency).

Technical Specialist-Haz Mat Reference Group Exercise Complete a hazardous data worksheet on hazardous materials involved Develop a plan for environmental monitoring Establish plan for field identification of samples Determine PPE compatibility Identify reference sources Project potential environmental effects of the release and protective actions necessary Maintain a unit log Advise the students to approach the scenario as if they were assigned to Tech. Spec. They should concentrate on the assignment given to them and not get to far ahead as they will be working on the same scenario with different assignments for each position. The idea is to reinforce that each team take a part of the problem (ie tech. spec. provide information, entry determines tactics for dealing with problem in the exclusion zone, etc.).
