Control (programming)

Developing ideas and making things happen The ICT National Curriculum Finding things out “Communicating ideas” Developing ideas and making things happen Data handling Research Word processing and multimedia Music and sound manipulation Digital imagery (photos, video, animation) Collaborating and publishing Control Modelling and simulations This presentation of the ICT National Curriculum is adapted from the York Local Authority ICT scheme of work

Controlling programmable toys (‘floor turtles’) Session objectives To consider some cross-curricular uses of programmable toys and software To be familiar with a range of appropriate hardware and software

Programmable toys Used in Foundation and Key Stage 1 classes. Excellent for work on direction, shape and space and estimation.

The Pixie has a simple control panel and can be used for number and directional work See www.swallow.co.uk

..so can the Bee-bot. www.bee-bot.co.uk You can make your own scenes for the Bee-bot to travel around

How would you introduce a programmable toy to children How would you introduce a programmable toy to children? How would you help them understand how to give it instructions/commands? E.g. see video “Introducing a programmable toy to Y1 class”

York Local Authority ICT Scheme of Work Foundation Stage To use simple remote control and programmable toys To understand ‘forward’ and ‘back’. How could you make this interesting for the children? E.g. Go on a walk in or around school. Recreate that journey as a linear map drawn on a large piece of paper. Guide Beebot along the linear map, stopping at pictures of key points of the journey

York Local Authority ICT Scheme of Work Y1 To understand that devices respond to commands To understand that they can programme a simple sequence of commands into a programmable robot or toy to send it on a route Look at York LA scheme of work for ICT, Control strand: Y1 for cross curricular examples to achieve this. Which one catches your attention? Think of another cross curricular example that would help children meet the objective

York Local Authority ICT Scheme of Work Y2 To understand that devices or on-screen turtles are controlled by sequences of instructions or actions To plan and give instructions to make things happen and describe the effects To be able to programme ½ and ¼ turns.

Y1/2 use of ‘logo’ software: E.g. Bee-bot simulator (Focus Educational Software)

Y1/2 use of ‘logo’ software: E.g. 2Simple Infant Video Toolkit Use Ctrl + Shift + O (Options)
