1.Collect your planaria from your class drawer. Opening Activity: Feb. 13, 2017 1.Collect your planaria from your class drawer. Take your measurements and observations for planaria A and B. Copy down the measurements and observations for Planaria C. Add spring water and return to drawer 2. Collect your DNA nucleotides and read the next steps of your lab (see handout at table). I can…create a DNA model and explain how DNA is replicated. Homework: Complete DNA Questions & Coloring Page

Let’s make a double helix! Lab #13 Modeling DNA Let’s make a double helix! Color the parts of the nucleotide monomers as follows: Adenine (A) = red Cytosine (C) = blue Guanine (G) = green Thymine (T) = yellow Sugar = orange Phosphate = purple Color and cut out each of the monomers. Link monomers (biosynthesis) to build chromosomes. The left side of your double helix should spell CAT. Use the remaining nucleotide monomers to finish the complementary strand of the double helix. Draw your DNA molecule and answer questions in journal. Group Quiz – When whole group is done, quiz and STAMP!

Building DNA DNA is double stranded The nucleotides on one strand COMPLEMENTS the nucleotides on the other strand = complementary base-pairing G-C and A-T COPY YOUR DNA MOLECULE INTO YOUR JOURNAL w/ Color. Circle a Thymine Nucleotide Answer Questions in journal

When Finished w/ DNA Models and Questions pick up from front table.: 1. DNA Structure Reading and Questions – tape reading in and answer questions in journal. DUE TOMORROW 2/14! DNA Replication Coloring Page - Use a different color for each molecule. DUE FRIDAY 2/17

I will stamp your DNA reading HW. Opening Activity: Feb. 14, 2017 I will stamp your DNA reading HW. List the sequence of the bases on the opposite strand? AGCTCAG What is the full set of DNA in an individual organism called? How many DNA polymers does a human cell contain? A planaria cell? I can… Explain the steps for DNA replication. Homework: DNA Quiz 2/17 DNA Replication Coloring due 2/17

DNA Replication

Opening Activity: Feb. 15, 2017 Complete copying the data table from the laminated sheet at your table into your journal under the Lab #14 heading. Compare the DNA of a muscle cell and a brain cell in human. How are they similar? Different? How does a cell prepare for cell division? I can… Explain how scientists study cell division. Explain what happens to DNA during cell division. Homework: DNA Quiz 2/17 DNA Replication Coloring due 2/17

DNA Prepares for Cell Division The chromosomes condense and become visible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kQpYdCnU14 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5zFOScowqo

Cell Division Card Sort With your partner, sort the cards in the order that you think best represents the process of cell division. Be prepared to explain your choices using evidence from the images. Once your order is approved, begin to fill in the Cell Division Graphic Organizer: Sketch the image Detailed description of the image Describe differences from the previous image (what changed?) BLUE = DNA GREEN = PROTEIN RED = PROTEIN

BLUE = DNA GREEN = PROTEIN RED = PROTEIN What do you observe in each image? What changes as the process proceeds?   BLUE = DNA GREEN = PROTEIN RED = PROTEIN

Exit Ticket – Write your name and answer on your small paper. In one sentence describe what happened to the DNA during cell division.

Opening Activity: Feb. 16, 2017 Put the following events in order: DNA condenses into a chromosome. DNA replicates to make an identical copy. Chromosomes are split apart into two cells. Chromosomes unwind to prepare for replication. How would you compare DNA and a chromosome? Complete your sketches and descriptions for lab 14. I can… Explain what happens to DNA during the cell cycle and cell division. Homework: DNA Quiz 2/17 DNA Replication Coloring due 2/17

Cell Cycle Video 1. Purpose of cell division is _____________. 2. Phases of Cell Cycle A. Interphase Gap 1 phase – S phase – Gap 2 phase – B. Division Phase is called ________________. 3. What is the purpose of the checkpoints? 4. What do you think would happen if there were no checkpoints?

A Closer Look at the Nucleus: Chromosomes

Microscopic image

Opening Activity: Feb. 17, 2017 Have your notebook open to your DNA replication coloring page – I will stamp. 2. Collect your planaria from your class drawer. Take your measurements and observations for planaria A and B. Copy data for Planaria C. Replace spring water using pipets at front and return to drawer. Homework: Update notebook, use class website top update opening activities. I can… Explain what happens to DNA during cell division.

When completed w/ Quiz Turn into the folder at front table labeled “put quiz here”. Pick up “Cell Cycle: Growth and Division” Reading – Tape into journal. Copy/Check notes from the sketches/description key at table. Create new page in journal titled “Lab #14 Part B”. Read laminated sheet and complete procedure #1. Write answers in journal under heading Lab #14 Part B.
