SUICIDE AND RESILIENCY

“TOUGH TIMES NEVER LAST, BUT TOUGH PEOPLE DO” Some people have more difficult times than other people do, but those difficult times don’t have last. People who hang in are resilient Resilient: is to be able to adjust, recover, bounce back and learn from difficult times. When those bad things happen it can put you into a life crisis where you experience a high level of stress.

5 EMOTIONAL RESPONSES DENY BEING ANGRY BARGAINING BEING DEPRESSED RESPONSES USED TO COPE WITH A LIFE CRISIS DENY BEING ANGRY BARGAINING BEING DEPRESSED ACCEPTING *Drinking alcohol interferes with a person’s ability to cope with a life crisis. Alcohol intensifies feelings of anger and depression.

HOW TO PREVENT SUICIDE A philosopher once said “The three grand essentials to happiness in life are: something to do, someone to love, and something to be hopeful for.” Something to do: gives sense of accomplishment Someone to love: gives you a chance to share thoughts, feelings, disappointments Something to be hopeful: you look forward to the future.

Suicide Suicide is the intentional taking of one’s own life. Some view it as a way to escape problems Some view it as a way to gain attention, or a way to get even with those who reject them There is always a better choice than suicide. Parasuicide: is a suicide attempt in which a person does not intend to die. It is a cry for help. Teens who make an attempt are depressed, discouraged, and lacking hope.

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES Teens who are at risk for attempting suicide may have one ore more of the following characteristics: Aggressive Behavior Inadequate Social Skills Perfectionistic Behavior Mental Disorders Feelings of Hopelessness Depression Hidden Anger Low Self-Esteem

Additional Risk Teens who attempt suicide may have had a difficult life experience such as a breakup, unwanted pregnancy, failure at school. Teens are more likely to attempt suicide if they: Abuse alcohol and other drugs Have experienced the death of a parent, parental separation or divorce Feel alienated from family and friends Are teased or rejected by peers Have difficulty coping with body changes and sexuality

How to Recognize Signs of Suicide Making direct statements Making indirect statements about killing themselves. “I wonder where I can get…” Having a change in personality Withdraw from family and friends Losing interest in personal appearance Having preoccupation with death and dying Making frequent complaints about physical symptoms related to emotions, such as stomachaches

How to Recognize Signs of Suicide Using alcohol and other drugs Losing interest in school work Giving possessions away Talking about getting even with others Failing to recover from a disappointing loss Running away from home Having a close friend or relative who has committed suicide

What to do… Look for warning signs, especially watch when you know they are depressed Listen without giving advice Take them seriously! Ask them if they have a plan Do not be sworn to secrecy Call a parent, a guardian, or other responsible adult immediately. Stay with them until professional help arrives

How to be Resilient Work on your relationships with family and friends Develop a close relationship with a mentor Choose friends who are supportive and who have responsible behavior Do not put off dealing with difficult situations Avoid choosing harmful behaviors as a way to cope Ask for support when you need it Be involved at school and your community
