Incomplete dominance This is when neither allele is dominant.
 Genes are found on the X AND Y chromosomes.  Genes that are carried on the sex chromosomes are called sex linked genes.

Can heredity follow different rules?
Alternate Patterns of Inheritance. The simple rules of Mendelian inheritance (complete dominanance) do not always apply…. there are exceptions.

REVIEW GENETICS- the study of heredity. Inheritance Traits are specific characteristics inherited from parents Genes are the factors that determine traits.
Non Mendelian Genetics Patterns of inheritance that aren’t simply dominant or recessive.
Warm Up Who is Gregor Mendel? What’s the difference between “true breeds” and “hybrids”? Explain his experimentations and their impact in genetics.

Incomplete & Co-dominance
Presentation transcript:

Alternate Patterns of Inheritance

Incomplete dominance – the dominant allele cannot totally hide the recessive, resulting in a blended heterozygote

Co-Dominance – 2 dominant alleles expressed at the same time

ABO blood type in humans – the alleles for A and for B are both dominant over O

Environmental factors – soil pH affects the color of hydrangea flowers

Acidic soil makes the flowers blue, basic or alkaline soil makes the flowers pink

Environmental factors– temperature and season affect the coat color of arctic foxes

Never on the Y Chromosome!!!!!!! Sex-Linked (X-linked) – traits that are found on the X Chromosome (NOT Y) XY – male XX – female B – no hairloss b – baldness XbY – male with the gene for baldness XBXb – heterozygous female Never on the Y Chromosome!!!!!!!
