Welcome to Reception! Class of 2018 - 2019

Your children have already learnt to … Come into school on their own. Sit on the carpet on during lessons and put up their hand. Write their name. Some letter sounds. What a hexagon is. How to run / walk 1K Tidy up! Walk in a line. Carry a dinner tray without dropping it. AND MANY MANY MORE

What does a typical day look like? Every day the children come in, put their water bottle in the right box, their coat on their peg and their book bag in the box. They then sit in their carpet space, get out their whiteboard and pen and complete the morning challenge. Every day the children have access to snack, both classrooms, the barn and outdoors.

Monday In the morning is guided reading, PE and phonics In the afternoon is maths and understanding the world.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Literacy and phonics in the morning Maths and understanding the world / RE / music in the afternoon.

Friday PE and PSHE in the morning. Literacy in the afternoon is then followed by sharing of home learning logs, star of the week, challenge reward and phonics. Library books are changed throughout Friday afternoon.

Wednesday at 2.30 pm is our big run! We have a track that goes around the school grounds. Five laps of it is a mile. Most of Reception are currently up to 3 laps which is just less than 1K. Some walk it and complete 2 laps. We are slowly building up to 5 laps. Schools are being encouraged to give their children the opportunity to run a daily mile. Find out more on https://thedailymile.co.uk/

What we need to practise … Some of the children are finding it tricky to hold a pencil correctly and write their names. Make sure letters are formed correctly and the name isn’t all in capitals. Segmenting and blending. The children are learning the letter sounds really well but are finding it difficult to read words because they can’t blend the sounds together.

Bug Club The children are making a great start with their books and talk positively in school about reading with you at home. If you have not yet logged on or are having any trouble, Mrs Jones is available at 3.30 for any questions or a quick tutorial.

Parents evening Will be in the second week back after half term. A great chance to look at your child’s books and talk to us about their successes and next steps in learning.

Your children are amazing! Lets see what they have been up the past few weeks …
