Self Starter 1. What is explicit instruction (direct instruction)? 2. 5 (high) and 1(low)--rate your ability to incorporate STEM components into your lesson plans.

“Beefing Up” Your Lessons Explicit Instruction STEM is the hot topic amongst science educators around the nation. Have you wondered if you are incorporating enough STEM components into your curriculum? In order to prepare our students of today for the jobs of tomorrow, we have to provide opportunities to not only learn content, but to develop critical thinking and collaboration skills as well. Cookbook, step by step labs simply won’t do. Objectives: 1. Be able to create/modify an existing lesson plan to deliberately include explicit instruction. 2. Be able to incorporate at least one STEM component into a lesson plan.

Explicit Instruction Please, go to my website. What do you all know about explicit instruction? (aka Direct Instruction)

Explicit Instruction I do We do Y’all do You do Model Prompt My turn; model how it is to be done. Prompt We do Let’s do this together; allow a student to direct. (Optional) Y’all do Try it with a partner; clarify any misconceptions; feedback. Check You do Your turn; practice/homework. I’m going to model this method with you all today by using a lesson on Diffusion. Assumptions: diffusion has been defined with examples and non-examples.

Let’s Practice Starter: Is it possible to change the rate of diffusion? How could you test this? The explicit instruction cycle could happen more than once in a lesson. I’m only going to go through one cycle with you. Brainstorm some ideas of what they could do to change the rate of diffusion.

Brainstorm Add a substance to the water (list all possible substances they can use.) Change the temperature or amount of water Change the shape of the container Stir or mix etc.

Let’s Practice Objective: I can design and conduct an experiment investigating the diffusion of particles. Question: How will ________ change the rate of diffusion? Writing the hypothesis: I do “If _____________ , then _____________ because _______________.” Vinegar, salt, sugar, ammonia, rubbing alcohol, peroxide, etc. Beads,

We do “If _____________ , then _____________ because _______________.” Choose another substance, but let the students guide me through how I’d write it. A duckling I like to choose something that they for sure aren’t going to be able to choose because I want their hypotheses to be original.

Y’all do “If _____________ , then _____________ because _______________.” Use “Y’all” do if you are going to have them doing individual work afterwards. For this activity, we worked in pairs, thus went straight to “You do”

You do Write your hypothesis for your experiment. “If _____________ , then _____________ because _______________.” Feedback, feedback, feedback Share with another group Share with the class

Tips Usually teachers are good at two of the three steps. Purposefully plan to include each step. TASK: Choose a lesson, perhaps one you are planning on using this next week. How can you include explicit instructions? ______ minutes

Changing Gears

Why is there such a focus on STEM? Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Why is there such a focus on STEM? What is stem? Example: Denver--graduated with a degree in accounting. He is the IT director for the company he works for and has his own consulting business on the side for which he is creating software for companies such as Jiffylube. Example: Leslie’s husband--no degree, but is now forced to learn a lot to work on autonomous trucks.

Incorporation So how are you going to integrate STEM components into your lessons this week? Talk with the people around you and come up with some ideas. Be prepared to share your ideas. We can’t afford to NOT do lessons with STEM components.
