Architecture, Construction and Interior Design Career Cluster Architecture, Construction and Interior Design

About Me: Hometown: Louisville, KY Middle School: NOE Middle school High school: fern creek traditional college: University of Kentucky major: interior design career areas: home remodeling, furniture sales, construction permits and licenses.

Specialty Skills: -reading construction documents (floor plans, etc.) -Hand drafting -computer drafting -sketching -carpentry -lighting design -event coordination -customer service

What do you like best about your career? Love that I get to see new development of what is going to be built/renovated in my city. Anytime there is a new restaurant or a new business coming to town I get to look at the plans and make notes or approve the building for a permit. What is a Building Permit? Who has to apply for a building permit? Why do I have to apply for a building permit? What other types of permits are there besides Building?

Trades within the construction world (sometimes these are called sub-contractors): -contractors or builders -electrical -heating ventilation and air conditioning (hvac) -plumbing

What something that’s “not so good” about your career? In order to get certified to become a Plan Reviewer and Building Inspector through the state I had to meet a lot of different qualifications. Including passing 4 very difficult tests within the first 18 months of my employment. My job relied on passing these tests…very nerve racking at the time.

Would you encourage others to peruse your career, Why or why not? Yes I would because it is a fun and rewarding career that offers a wealth of knowledge. Being a Building Inspector is a respected job title. I would also encourage anyone who plans to be a part of the construction world or even anyone who owns a home to be familiar with the Local Building Code and how the city operates. Why not, many people don’t like dealing with city government and all of the “stops” we put on projects. Sometimes it is difficult to deal with those types of customers, but luckily there are always other people here to help.

What are some fun aspects of your career? Being independent Not having to work in a Sales Position Being protected by the Government at large Having great benefits (Fun is relative when you are an adult) Working with great people Providing life safety for the public Knowing that you could be potentially saving someone's life Being one step ahead of development Problem solving (can be fun for some people) Holiday parties and cookouts

What is the most challenging aspect of your career? Educating others on how to build and follow the code correctly Code interpretation Difficult Customers Politics of Government Being very thorough in all of your work

What is the most satisfying aspect of your career? Getting to help the general public achieve their goals with their home or business Knowing that I understand how this government process works and how this is only going to elevate my career and my knowledge Knowing that I will learn something new EVERYDAY Having a career that will provide secure benefits for my family Knowing that I have the tools and knowledge to work in other construction related industries if I ever decide to do so. Being a apart of a great team!

Something that happened at work that you will never forget was…. When I won runner up in the Derby Hat competition! …..and when I passed all of those tests! Residential Building Inspector Commercial Building Inspector Residential Mechanical Inspector Commercial Mechanical Inspector
