1.4 The Associative Properties Objective (things to learn): How to evaluate expressions involving parentheses. Similar to the commutative property, the associative property only applies to addition and multiplication. It’s easy!!! Just remember, that with the associative property the grouping symbols can move anywhere without changing the value of the expression. LOOK Algebra 1c

1.4 The Associative Properties Examples Calculate. 1 (2 + 5)2 = 72 = 49 Recall: Always do parentheses first (5 2)2 = 102 = 100 . 2 Algebra 1c

1.4 The Associative Properties Examples Evaluate each expression. 1 (6x)2 – 10 for x = 1 = (6 1)2 – 10 = 62 - 10 = 36 – 10 = 26 . 2 (10 + y)(x – 3) for y = 2 and x = 5 = (10 + 2)(5 – 3) = (12)(2) = 24 Algebra 1c

1.4 The Associative Properties Examples Use the associative property to write an equivalent expression. 1 x + (y + z) = (x + y) + z Recall: The associative property says that you can move the grouping symbols without changing the value of the expression!!!!!! . . . 2 (5 n) m = 5 (nm) Algebra 1c
