Paragraph Structure

Rules Choose one subject: A paragraph is too brief to discuss more than one subject. Make a single point: To “make a point” is to tell readers something that you want them to know. Usually, you will state your point in the topic sentence of your paragraph.

Topic Sentence The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph (but it can be placed in the middle or the end). Remember, the topic sentence is the main idea of your paragraph! All other sentences must relate back to the topic sentence.

The Concluding Sentence Each paragraph should end with a concluding sentence—a sentence that brings the paragraph to a close, and if appropriate, leads to the next pargraph.

A Table? A paragraph is like a table: The topic sentence is like the table top. Just as the table top’s purpose is to provide a flat surface for writing or eating, the topic sentence’s purpose is to give the reader a broad view of the topic. Without legs (supporting details), the table top will not stand. A table that rocks on an uneven floor makes people wonder if objects on it will fall off. Similarly, a paragraph without a clear conclusion may leave the reader wondering if the writer has left out some important ideas.
