Rhea: Mother of the Titans By Maria Zulfiqar, Latin ii

Who is Rhea? Rhea was the daughter of Uranus and Gaea Her brother Cronus eventually marries her

The Prophecy Cronus learned from Gaea and Uranus that just as he had overthrown Uranus, one of his own children would overthrow him.

Cronus’s Reaction Cronus decided that the best thing to do to prevent losing his throne was to swallow each of his children as they were born. He did this for his and Rhea’s first five children: Hestia, Hades, Demeter, Poseidon, and Hera

Rhea’s Plan Rhea, when she was pregnant with her sixth child, decided to outsmart Cronus. She hid the birth of Zeus on Mount Dicte in Crete, and handed a rock wrapped up to Cronus, who swallowed it, thinking it was Zeus

Overthrowing Cronos He Zeus grew up in hiding, but when was grown, he returned to fight Cronos. He won the fight, and as a result, his siblings were freed. Cronos was finally overthrown.

Rhea’s Mark on History A temple was dedicated to Rhea at the very site where Zeus was born in Crete Her symbol is a pair of lions pulling a celestial chariot Since she is the Titaness mother of the gods and was often confused with Cybele (Mother Earth) in artwork starting in the fourth century A.D.
