Who are PCS? PCS - the Public and Commercial Services Union, has 185,000 members in both the civil service and in private sector companies delivering government contracts. PCS organises in all areas of the public sector; - in tax offices, job centres, museums, galleries, - courts, airports, coastguard stations, docks, - police and law enforcement, customs, IT, - administration, policy – in fact in most walks of public life.

“Equality at the heart of everything we do” “Equality at the heart of everything we do”. A reality – Not just another noble slogan! As a trade union, PCS organises groups of workers who have joined together to achieve common goals in the workplace, such as fair wages, better working conditions and a safer working environment. We work with members to promote equality and tackle discrimination in the workplace, society and the wider world. PCS is committed to ensuring those members in groups currently under-represented in our union’s structures are encouraged and supported to play a full and active role. We do this by conducting regular equality mapping and ensuring employers conduct EIA’s.

Issues affecting Black workers Public Sector Pay Cap – PCS national consultative ballot Job security & Office closure Discriminatory HR policies Office closures Discriminatory Performance Management Systems Bullying and harassment Significant rise in RACISM and ISLAMOPHOBIA in the workplace and society Concerns over immigration status – threats of deportation

Breaking down barriers – Black activists Rise up through the rank and file! Following a national union strategic review and membership survey, we found that PCS members from ethnic minority backgrounds were more likely to be interested in getting involved in the union than white members, but also face more barriers. Accepting the lived experience of intersectionality we have started organising and campaigning on issues members and non members say they care widely and deeply about. Setting up pan equality regional networks to organise for equality, freedom and justice. Identifying, training & developing Black Union Advocates

PCS Charter for Equality – Reflects TUC’s Stephen Lawrence Task Group A six-point checklist against which PCS decision-making bodies can review the organisation and structures that they have in place to support and progress the equality agenda and equality plans Ensuring that under-represented groups are able to participate in union activity Tackling under-representation on decision-making bodies Building networks and equality structures Representing members Progressing equality issues Reviewing and reporting on progress.
