Honey boom: Despite scares caused by colony collapse disorder and dwindling hives in the US and Europe, managed honey bee populations have steadily increased globally for the last 50 years, with a few slight hiccups. Wild pollinators under threat: While data for wild pollinators are scarce, surveys of species such as bumble bees suggest that the populations of wild pollinators may be contracting due to factors such as habitat destruction and climate change. Citizen science: To address the lack of data on wild pollinators — their abundance and distribution — some scientists have called on local citizens for help. One manifestation of this scientist–layman collaboration is the Buzz Club in the UK.
