Servanthood Challenge of the 21st Century Matthew 25:31-46
Why does servanthood rankle? Main problem is human pride We often fail to see great leaders are simultaneously great servants Being servant of the Lord also means we are servants of our fellow men
Jesus turned concept of greatness upside down Matthew 20:17-28 Illustrated when he washed disciples’ feet—John 13:12-17 Do we get the point? God became OUR servant…
Leadership involves service Having authority doesn’t nix service Consider these roles of authority: 1. Husband and father 2. Elders 3. Deacons 4. Minister 5. Members
Serving Lord means serving one another also Some see being servant of Lord OK, but balk at menial tasks to help fellow man But, remember what Jesus said… (John 13) Greatest = servant—Matthew 23:11 Jesus came to serve—Mark 10:45
How do we fit in this picture? Do we come to worship to serve or be served? Does unconstructive criticism depict serving others…or selfishness? Hospitality?
A few conclusions… Great need in church today for humility and service Parable of Talents: God expects active servants, not merely doing little wrong Failure to be a servant is a SIN Linked to church growth—or lack thereof If lesson strikes home—time to repent If you’re not Christian—also not God’s servant Won’t you accept God’s call to service?
