Scientific Notation and Graphing Objectives 1:c and 4

Essential Questions How do you convert to and use scientific notation? How do you calculate using scientific notation? How do you draw a line graph? How do you interpret a line graph?

Scientific Notation Scientific notation is when a number between 1-10 is being multiplied by a 10 raised to a power. Number of stars in a galaxy

Scientific Notation (cont) When writing in scientific notation you move the decimal until the number is between 1-10 When you move to the right it is a negative power and to the left is a positive power Ex: 1000 = 1.0 x 103 0.0011 = 1.1 x 10-3

Scientific Notation (cont) Convert into scientific notation 31 100 0.008 92 7 200 000 000 0.000 000 000 065 Convert to regular notation 5.09 x 10-8 2.45 x 106 6.3 x 103 2.03 x 10-5

Scientific Notation (cont) Calculate the following (using EE, exp, or x 10x) Write answers in scientific notation and round to the nearest tenth. (5. 9 x 10-10)(5.4 x 106) 6.3 x 103 1.0 x 10-3 (3.0 x 10-2)(2.3 x 104) 9.9 x 10-6 (7.0 x 10-6)_______ (3.9 x 10-11) (2.4 x 10-9) = 3.2 x 10-3 = 6.3 x 106 = 7.0 x 107 = 7.5 x 1013

Line Graphs The independent variable (the one being changed) is the x-axis and the dependent variable is the y-axis Label each axis with its value and type of measurement Place a dot where the values for both the x-axis and y-axis meet Connect the dots with a line

Line Graphs (cont) Graph the following data points Elevation (m) Temperature (°C) 100 19.5 200 18.7 300 18 400 17.5 500 16.8 600 16 Graph the following data points The independent variable is elevation and the temperature is the dependent variable

Interpreting Line Graphs If a slope is close to being linear (straight line) there is a direct relationship between the variables. If the line goes up from left to right it means as the independent variable increases the dependent variable increases with it If the line sinks as it goes to the right it means as the independent variable increases the dependent variable decreases

Interpreting Line Graphs (cont) Proportional (increase together) Inversely proportional (independent increases, but the dependent decreases)

Interpreting Line Graphs (cont) Graph the following data points The independent variable is time and the distance is the dependent variable What is the relationship between time and distance? Time (hours) Distance (Km) 1 10 2 20 3 30 4 40

Interpreting Line Graphs (cont) Time (sec) Position (m) 60 2 50 4 40 6 30 8 20 10 Graph the following data points The dependent variable is position and the time is the independent variable What is the relationship between position and distance?

Essential Questions How do you convert to and use scientific notation? How do you calculate using scientific notation? How do you draw a line graph? How do you interpret a line graph?
