Dante and Virgil are heading toward the pit that houses Satan. CANTO 31 Dante and Virgil are heading toward the pit that houses Satan. It is very dark and Dante thinks he sees towers.

Virgil tells Dante that those are not towers but giants. The giants are standing in the 9th circle and their navels are level with the 8th circle. 8th circle 9th circle

These giants are frozen up to their navels in ice. As they continue they meet a giant named Nimrod. Who built the Tower of Babel.

Dante and Virgil come across Antaeus. Virgil flatters Antaeus and gets him to help them. Dante and Virgil were here And now they are here

The bottom is covered in ice. Antaeus helps Dante and Virgil by picking them up in his hands and places them in the 9th circle. The bottom is covered in ice.
