Environmental Impacts - Decline KQ: How can the environmental impacts of changes in work be managed sustainably – Case Study: The Ruhr Area

Starter Activity You need your homework from last lesson. We will be peer assessing your answers. What are the advantages of the jobs in the formal sector in a place like Mexico City? What are the main disadvantages? (6 marks) What information should we be looking for? Key words? Structure? At least 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages What is the formal sector?

Case Study: The Ruhr (Germany) Stick in the map of the Ruhr Area. Locate the main cities of Essen, Bochum, Dortmund and Dusseldorf. Skills Builder questions: Which river runs from south to north through the area? Which river runs from east to west across the area? Describe the position of the ‘green’ areas on the map. Why are they in these places?

Positive and negative environmental impacts Evolving Planet pg 188-189 Re-Read through the information on the two case studies: Mexico city Ruhr area (Germany) Complete the summary sheets for The Ruhr area looking at the positive environmental impacts of changes in jobs. Answer Activity 3 in full sentences in your books.

Finally... This section looked at how declining jobs led to an improvement in the environment. Can you think of any other examples of where this has happened? **Think closer to home.
