What is a community School district? A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between a school district and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, youth development, family support, health and social services, and community development leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities.

Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going? Administered the Harvard Making Caring Common student and staff survey SRCS Community Schools Presentations to San Rafael City Council Students trained as peer facilitators Hosted 11 listening sessions with community stakeholders (total participants 200-220) Analysis Report of community listening sessions – Presentation to SRCS Board Establishment of SRCS-FSCS District Leadership Team Hire a Community Schools Coordinator Integration of FSCS into LCAP aligned goals toward improved outcomes for students Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going? 2015-2016 2014-15

Why SRCS Community-school listening sessions? “I discovered the magic of people telling their own stories. One of the simplest paths to deep change is for the less powerful to speak as much as they listen, and for the more powerful to listen as much as they speak.” – Gloria Steinem

EMERGENT THEMES AND RECOMMENDATIONS COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS between SRCS and our community partners should be based on shared goals that are fundamental to student and family success. IMPROVED COORDINATION OF SERVICES AND RESOURCES Significant changes in how SRCS and external service providers move toward an integrated coordination of services to better support students and families. IMPROVED COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY Investment is essential. POSITIVE AND RESTORATIVE RELATIONS Voices of students and adults alike must be heard and valued.

HOW WILL WE RESPOND? How do we build authentic parent and student engagement that is strength-based? How do we maintain high level and meaningful school/community dialogue? How do we strengthen and move forward with coordination of services for students and families?

Moving Forward Meaningful Student Voice and Engagement Leveraging and Alignment of LCAP Partnership Engagement with Shared Accountability and Focus on Improved Outcomes Asset-based Parent Engagement Forums for Continued Dialogue and Relationship Building
