Reflective Writing for GP Trainers Educational Team Development Service Redbridge and Waltham Forest GP Trainers’ Workshop 8 May 2015 Reflective Writing for GP Trainers
Some concepts Reflection Reflective practice Reflective writing Reflective writing for appraisal Reflective writing for revalidation
Putting these all together… “In most cases, your appraiser will be interested in what you did with the information and your reflections on that information, not simply that you collected it and maintained it in a portfolio. Their appraiser will want to know what you think the supporting information says about your practice and how you intend to develop or modify your practice as a result of that reflection” Good Medical Practice framework for appraisal and revalidation (GMC march 2011)
However… The usefulness and quality of reflective writing are likely to depend mainly on a doctor’s skills in reflection, and the reflectiveness of their practice more widely. As a trainer, the best way you can encourage reflective practice is to model it. You will be able to teach and judge the quality of reflections better, if you are confident in carrying out reflective writing yourself
Some frameworks for thinking and writing about reflection
Schon’s Reflective Practitioner Reflection in action Reflection on action
Kolb’s Learning Cycle
Burns and Bulman’s Professional Practitioner
SMARTER Specific… what precisely do I want to do? Measurable… will I have some way of knowing how well I have done it? Achievable… am I able actually to do this? Realistic… How likely is it that this will be done? Timed… by when will this be completed? Ethical… will this plan lie within governance frameworks? Reviewed… when and how will I see how this plan is getting on?
