Adjectives What are Adjectives?

An adjective is a word that modifies a noun. What is an adjective? An adjective is a word that modifies a noun. colorful big old happy

Find the adjectives. The bald teacher handed out the white papers.

The laptop computer has a blue and a black screen.

All adjectives that describe a noun and which are placed before the noun are called attributive adjectives.

The school bus is big. school big

crazy The pilot was crazy.

The adjectives that are part of the predicate after a linking verb are called predicative adjectives.

When you have more than one adjective, they need to follow certain order.

Sometimes nouns act as adjectives. The two doctors visited the sick patient at the community hospital.

There are single adjectives like: nice / intelligent / huge / important. There are multiword adjectives like: good-looking / self-confident / two-year-old / well-bred / well-intentioned. single multiword

Exercises: Recognize the adjectives and say if they are attributive or predicative. 1 – Fragrant homemade bread is becoming common in many American homes. 2 – The early Egyptians added yeast and made conical, triangular, or spiral loaves as well as large, flat, open-centered disks. 3 – People used to eat black bread because they were poor. 4 – Bread lovers now buy black bread by choice.
