Discover your Library Loan Stars Jennifer Hubbs - jhubbs@essa.library.on.ca Kat Drennan-Scace - kdrennan@hpl.ca Who does reader’s advisory in their day to day work? What do you find to be some of the biggest challenges?

What is Loan Stars? Get lists at loanstars.ca The 10 hottest books published monthly, as voted by library staff across Canada. Similar to LibraryReads in the US, the program allows librarians and library staff the chance to read new adult fiction and non-fiction books ahead of publication, and to recommend and vote for their top choices. It is a collaborative readers’ advisory service and marketing tool for library staff.

Who can be involved? This could be you! Any employee of a Canadian library – public, educational, private or otherwise. You must sign up using a library staff email. Flexible time commitment - if you’re pressed for time, you don’t have to vote every month

Who is behind this? We are grateful for the support of so many publishers, including PRH, SSC, House of Anansi, Hachette Canada, Second Story Press, Dundurn, ECW Press. There are some publishers who are not part of this program, including HarperCollins Canada, but most other Canadian publishers and distributors are connected with the program.

Sign up with CataList using your library email address. Log into CataList and find new titles Request a copy either using Netgalley or through the publisher Start Reading! Vote for your favourites! Repeat! You can vote for as many titles as you like. Here are the steps it takes. I’m going to go over each step in more detail with a live demo, but here are the basics! Register for LoanStars with Catalist. Make sure you use your work address so we know you work in a Canadian library. Only titles available through Catalist are eligible, so if you do have an advanced copy from another source, make sure it’s eligible for the Loan Stars program. * Browse the list of upcoming titles * Request, read and vote We run contests occasionally, so the more you vote, the more you're eligible to win, too!

Before we find books... February 28th - April publication dates March 31st - May publication dates April 30th - June publication dates Eligible books must meet certain criteria: They must be NEW releases – no trade or paperback versions, no re-releases They must be offered by one of the participating partners What books were your top picks of 2016?

Let’s find books to vote for! Live demo time!

Sign up for Catalist Make sure when you sign up for Catalist, you indicate you work in a library and use a library email address.

Past lists will be posted first, and currently eligible books will be below. In many cases, the books are listed by category to help you find want you want.

Eligible books must meet certain criteria: They must be NEW releases – no trade or paperback versions, no re-releases They must be offered by one of the participating partners

Request and Vote!

What are the benefits? Fame! Glory! Obviously fame and glory and getting to be near Ryan Reynolds and Gosling

Seriously … Access to free books ahead of publication Ability to discover new authors and champion favourite titles Share knowledge about books with your colleagues Build content knowledge Helps those early in their career to network and build their resume Also, getting advanced copies of great books Getting an easy go-to list of great titles to recommend Exposure to books that you might not otherwise consider Enhanced reader’s advisory based on the recommendations of librarians across Canada Also looks great for library staff just starting out

In library promotion Printable posters In-library displays Book stickers Bookmarks Word of mouth Online lists etc! Let’s brainstorm promo ideas & marketing tools (2 stories - newbie requester and first book received) Can you highlight in your catalog Bibliocommons lists Book club kit bag stuffer

You can also find us... facebook.com/loanstars @LoanStarsCA loanstars.tumblr.com goodreads.com/LoanStars Quill & Quire has recognized LoanStars as a valuable resource since it’s inception by publishing the lists online - and as of next month, they will also be printed in the monthly magazine. We need your votes! Let’s brainstorm promo ideas & marketing tools Can you highlight in your catalog Bibliocommons lists

How successful has it been? Out of the first 8 Loan Stars published in 2016, 6.25% of Loan Stars top picks appeared on prize shortlists, resulting in 10 shortlist nominations. While Do Not Say We Have Nothing earned four of those nominations, library staff also selected: By Gaslight, by Steven Price The Best Kind of People, by Zoe Whittall The Parcel, by Anosh Irani The Break, by Katherena Vermette

The next Giller Prize winner is out there waiting to be read … and you can read it first with LoanStars.
