Research Day 1

Bell Work Take out your Unit 1 IDs. 1. Define “research.” 2. Why do you think research is important for Psychology?

Interesting Facts Did you know that breast-fed babies can recognize their mother’s odor and voice just days after being born? Did you know that opposites generally don’t attract? We can tell all this through research!!

SO why do we research?

Index Card Activity As a group, read your index card. Discuss the statement. Do you think the statement on your index card is true? Why or why not?

Group A Psychologists have found that separation weakens romantic attraction. As the saying goes, “Out of sight, out of mind.” This statement is true and unsurprising.

Group B Psychologists have found that separation strengthens romantic attraction. As the saying goes, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” This untrue result is easily imaginable, and some might see it as unsurprising common sense. Seems like there is a problem…..

Hindsight Bias “I Knew It All Along!”

Examples

Anagrams!! WREAT WATER ETRYN ENTRY GRABE BARGE How long would it take you to unscramble these letters???

THIS IS OVERCONFIDENCE! “The telephone may be appropriate for our American cousins, but not here, because we have an adequate supply of messenger boys” -British expert group evaluating the invention of the telephone

Perceiving Order in Random Events Have you ever picked up your phone to call your best friend, only to find that he/she is calling you at that exact moment? How many times did that NOT happen? It’s totally random!

“An event that happens to but 1 in 1 billion people every day occurs about 7 times a day, 2500 times a year.”
