Characteristics of Christian Maturity Lesson 12 — 3:12-21 Sunday, December 1

HUMBLE RECOGNITION (vv. 12a-b, 13a, 15b) “I have not arrived” (vv. 12a, 13a). “I want to attain” (v. 12b). “I may be apathetic” (v. 15b).

FOCUSED EXERTION (vv. 13b-14, 16-19) You must forget the past (v. 13b). You must pursue the goal (vv. 13c-14). You must ignore distractions (vv. 16-19). Some distractions are personal (v. 16). Some distractions are people (vv. 17-19).

PROPER MOTIVATION (vv. 12c, 14, 20-21) We have been possessed (v. 12c). We have been picked (v. 14). We have been promised (vv. 20-21).

“If you don't run, you can't win.” CONCLUSION “If you don't run, you can't win.” “We have not already obtained this and are not already perfect [humble recognition], but we press on to make it our own [focused exertion], because Christ Jesus has made us His own [proper motivation].”
