Czar Nicholas II forced THE New Russian News March 1917 WORLD EXCLUSIVES Czar Nicholas II forced to abdicate his throne! What will happen to the Czar and his family? The new Provisional Government set to make major decisions.

March 1917 The Czar has just abdicated his throne! Power over Russia has been given to 2 groups of people. Group 1: The Duma led by Alexander Kerensky! The new Provisional Government will hold elections soon. Group 2: A large group of workers and soldiers called the Petrograd Soviet ! How does it work? The provisional government can only pass a law if the Petrograd Soviet agrees to it

March 1917: The Provisional Government’s Decisions! Decision 1: PG will not end the war with Germany Russians would have to pay too much Decision 2: Petrograd Soviets control the Army Decision 3: PG will introduce freedom of speech & the press, & the right to strike

November 17th, 1917-Bolsheviks Take Over Trotsky, a leading Bolshevik, organizes the Red Guard. They take control of: Train stations & bridges Main telegraph office Other key buildings Kerensky (leader of the P.G.) fled. The Bolsheviks have taken the city except for the Winter Palace where the PG is seated.

The Storming of the Winter Palace At 9.00 pm the cruiser-ship Aurora fired a shell to signal the start of the takeover of the Palace! The Bolsheviks marched on the Palace …but defenders had either fled or gave up! The PG was captured and the Bolsheviks had control of Russia!
