Flint selected timeline

Flint become Michigan’s fourth city under the control of an Emergency Manager appointed by the Governor. Flint has deficits of $25 million.

April 17, 2014 “I do not anticipate giving the OK to begin sending out water anytime soon.” Michael Glasgow Water Treatment Plant Operator (indicted)

April 25, 2014 Flint begins using water from the Flint River instead of Lake Huron “The test results have shown that our water is not only safe but of the highest quality that Flint customers have come to expect.” Howard Croft Director of Public Works (indicted)

June 2014 Complaints about the water quality are coming in

October 13, 2014 General Motors will no longer use Flint River water at its engine plant over corrosion and buys water from Lake Huron

January 12, 2015 State building in Flint uses alternate water source including water coolers on each floor

March 2015 Presence of Legionnaires Disease becomes known in government circles. Not announced by the Governor for 9 months. 90 people got sick and 12 died

April 24, 2015 MDEQ admits its does no corrosion control two months after telling EPA that it did

June 24, 2015 Miguel Del Toral of EPA sounds his most urgent alarm on lead and consequences of lack of corrosion control made worse by use of ferric chloride to treat organic matter in the Flint River which likely accelerates corrosion of leaded water pipes and makes the lead problem worse. “In the absence of any corrosion control treatment, lead levels in drinking water can be expected to increase.”

July 9, 2015 Curt Guyette of the American Civil Liberties Union breaks the story of serious concerns about lead in Flint’s drinking water by releasing the Del Toral interim report. He obtained it from the Foint mother who had asked Del Toral for help.

July 24, 2105 “…the bottom line is that residents of Flint do not need to worry about lead in their water supply, and DEQ’s recent sampling does not indicate an eminent (sic) health threat from lead or copper.” Brad Wurfel Communications Director Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (indicted)

July 28, 2015 “…we don’t believe our data demonstrates an increase in lead poisoning rates that might be attributable to the change in water for Flint.” Nancy Peeler, Director Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (indicted)

September 2, 2105 Professor Marc Edwards releases a report which asserts that the corrosiveness of Flint River Water is causing lead to leach into residents’ water FlintWaterStudy.org released on September 11, 2015

September 24, 2105 Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha from Hurely Medical Center releases her research which found blood-lead levels of children 5 and under in one high-risk zip code had nearly tripled since Flint Water use began in April of 2014.
