Energy Transformations

What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It may be transformed from one form into another, but the total amount of energy never changes.

What type of Energy Transformation is happening in the following pictures?

Potential to Kinetic as the water from behind the dam falls over the dam.

Potential to Kinetic as the rubber band is stretched, and then released.

Potential to Kinetic as the book falls off of the shelf.

Kinetic to Potential as someone lifts the book and then places it on the shelf.

Kinetic to Potential as the ball stops due to friction

Mechanical energy transformations may involve other kinds of energy!

What happens when the books hit the floor?

We also get HEAT and SOUND energy!

We can get ELECTRICAL Energy if the water flowing over a dam powers a generator.

Green plants turn SOLAR ENERGY into CHEMICAL ENERGY (food).

How do animals transform CHEMICAL ENERGY into MECHANICAL ENERGY?

They transfer CHEMICAL ENERGY from their food into MECHANICAL ENERGY, so that they are able to move.

Carbon-based fuels come from the bodies of plants or animals.

CHEMICAL ENERGY can be transformed into HEAT ENERGY when the fuels are burned.

HEAT ENERGY from fuels can be transformed to ELECTRICAL ENERGY at a power plant.

In an electric circuit, the ELECTRICAL ENERGY can be transformed into many different types of energy such as mechanical, sound, light, and heat.
