5 Mental Stages of the Lost Victim PAD3O

5 Mental Stages of the Lost Victim Running away from the area to get as far away as possible

5 Mental Stages of the Lost Victim 2. Walking around circles National Geographic did a study to see if people really do walk in circles  Sun out = No Cloudy = Yes Blindfolded = All over the place.

5 Mental Stages of the Lost Victim 3. Become obsessed with strange images. (ie) birds = ghosts, stumps = monsters

5 Mental Stages of the Lost Victim 4. Madness of the woods sets in. One starts to question everything and may even run away from rescuers

5 Mental Stages of the Lost Victim 5. Just keep walking and falling down. Victim is now close to death.

Some Things to Note Stories of people being lost and they decided to keep walking because they did not want to fee stupid. Being found sitting and waiting doesn’t seem like the “manly thing to do.

Some Things to Note Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)will most likely affect anyone who has been in a life threatening situation

Some Things to Note Preventative medicine:- What are some tings we can do to prevent getting lost and ending up in a survival situation. 1. Inform someone of your activities: - where you are going, how long, when you will be back, if you are with someone else

Some Things to Note 2. Study the area you are going before you get there Find landmarks and study terrain before you go.

Some Things to Note 3. Bring equipment that will help you stay on course. Compass, map, GPS. Use it before you get lost

Some Things to Note 4. Be aware of your surroundings – take note of features around you and not just the trail in front of you.

How to decide to travel or not 1. know your exact location

How to decide to travel or not 2. Orienteering methods (Compass, maps, gps)

How to decide to travel or not 3. Unusual physical stamina

How to decide to travel or not 4. Suitable clothing

How to decide to travel or not 5. Available food, fuel, shelter or equipment to get it

Important Things to Think About Chances of being located are greater if you stay at your shelter. It takes twice as much food (energy) to travel as it does to sit and relax One may not be able to find shelter, fuel or food along your route.

Activity In groups of 3-4 students answer the following question Will you travel or not? Scenario You and your friends decided to go camping between Ranger Lake and hwy 129. You are over 20 km into the woods. A bear destroyed most of your belongings and food. Supplies- 6 L of water, food for 2 days, Compass, map, matches, tent, sleeping bags, fishing rod with a bare hook, and the clothing you are currently in. Since you are camping, you told people you would be gone for 4 days but you became lost while looking for a campsite on day 1 and one of your group members twisted their ankle. Decide if you are going to try to travel. Give reasons as to why you will or will not travel.
