Figure 1 Retinoic Acid Regulates the Balance between Dormant and Activated Hematopoietic Stem Cells dHSCs display high expression of the retinoic acid (RA) program and can be isolated as EGFP-positive HSCs from the Gprc5c-EGFP reporter mouse. dHSC are further characterized by low biosynthesis, restricted protein translation, and low levels of c-myc and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Active RA signaling retains HSC dormancy, while reduced RA signaling disrupts the balance between dormancy and activity at the expense of dHSCs, especially in stressed hematopoiesis such as inflammation.
