Liz Egbert Latin I, II, and Intro to Latin 2017-2018 Kenmore, Gunston, and Jefferson Middle Schools

Salve! Hello! My name is Liz Egbert. I currently teach Latin at Gunston, Kenmore, and Jefferson Middle Schools and travel between those schools during the day. Jefferson- I see Latin I and II students everyday. 6th grade Intro to Latin students see me every other day based on the A/B day schedule. Gunston- I see both Latin I and II on Mondays. Latin II sees me Wednesday for block and Latin I on Thursday for block. Ms. Abdulkareem is the facilitator in the classroom five days a week. Kenmore- I see both Latin I and II on Tuesdays and Friday. Ms. Davila is the facilitator in the classroom five days a week.

Class Information Please review the course objectives and other information in the syllabus for your child’s level and class on my school webpage. https://jefferson.apsva.us/post/staff/magistra-egbert/ Please email me with any questions throughout the year. elizabeth.egbert@apsva.us

Canvas My classes will be using the Canvas site this year rather than Google Classroom or Blackboard. Students can access Canvas through the app on their iPads or through the school main page. Homework, upcoming events, handouts, and resources are all posted under ‘Announcements’ and appear on the front page of the app. Older resources, handouts, or links can be found under ‘Files’.

Latin I and II Workload Each quarter, students will have one project to complete and one or two tests. Quizzes are usually scheduled every other week. Homework portfolios are due every four weeks, around interims and the end of the quarter. Jefferson students can expect around 3 homework assignments a week. These are due the following day and students may have time to begin in class (10-15 minutes).

Latin I and II Distance Workload Students at Kenmore will have in-class assignments Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. These are expected to be completed by the following Tuesday or Friday the next time I see them in class. Any work not completed in class should be finished at home. Students at Gunston will have in-class assignments during block on Tuesday for Latin I and Friday for Latin II. These are expected to be completed by the following Thursday or Monday, the next time I see them in class. Any work not completed in class should be finished at home.

6th Grade Intro to Latin Students will not have homework or tests in this class. Grades are based on classwork, quizzes and projects. Classwork may be individual or in groups, and activities may be spread out over several days. Each quarter there will be one in-class project and two to three quizzes. Unlike Latin I and II, quizzes count as a summative assessment.

Homework (does not apply to 6th grade classes) Homework is checked for completion the day it is due. It is not expected to be perfectly accurate, since students are still mastering that material or skill. As long as students have made an effort to finish the assignment, they will receive full credit. Each day’s homework is worth one point if complete, or zero points if missing or incomplete. We review the homework as a class on the due date. Students are expected to make corrections as we go.

Homework Portfolio (does not apply to 6th grade classes) Every four weeks, students turn in all homework from that period in as a portfolio. The assignments can be stapled together or in a folder. The portfolio is collected and graded based on completion and accuracy. Students are expected to have made corrections during class and complete missing assignments at home. The portfolio is worth 30 points. Students receive full credit if all assignments are finished and correct and lose points for incomplete or uncorrected work.

Grading System Grades are divided into two categories: formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments are homework, classwork, and quizzes. These are ‘practice’ to help students develop mastery. Summative assessments are tests and projects. Students show that they have mastered the material or skill. Formative assessments are worth 30% of their total grade. Summative assessments are worth 70% of their total grade.

After-school Events Every year there are numerous after-school Latin events in Arlington and Virginia. These include movie nights, museum exhibits, certamen (similar to Quiz Bowl), the winter Saturnalia banquet, mini-convention, and the state Latin convention in Richmond. More information on each event will be posted on Canvas under ‘Announcements’ as they are planned. All events are optional and participation counts for extra credit.
