Presentation transcript:

Where do cells come from??? With the invention of the microscope and the contributions of many scientists, a very important question was answered in the 1850’s. WHERE DO CELLS COME FROM????????????? THE CELL THEORY explains the answer to this question.

THE CELL THEORY All living things are made of cells. Cells carry out the functions needed to support life. Cells only come from other living cells.

The Cell Theory The Cell Theory was discovered due to: 1- the discovery of the microscope 2 - contributions of many scientists

Anton von Leeuwenhoek Credited as the inventor of the microscope.

Anton von Leeuwenhoek He first looked at pond water & discovered microscopic living things moving around. He called them animalicules. http://www.exploratorium.edu/imaging_station/images/gallery2/video.jpg

Robert Hooke Coined the term “CELL” after observing that cork looked like little squares or prison cells through the microscope. All living things are made of cells!

Robert Hooke Cork Cells Hooke viewed Cork Cells under Electron Microscope

Francesco Redi Proved that LIVING things can NOT be produced from NON-Living Matter!

Louis Pasteur Discovered that cells come only from other living cells.
