Pathways 1.0 The Battle Begins

Defining Pathways at MCC Pathways means many different things Undecided on specific program Undecided on transfer institution Pathways focusing on undecided/transfer students Degree meets MTA Degree offers great flexibility Degree offers limited direction Stackable credentials Pathways originally restricted to Associate of Science and Arts Defining Pathways at MCC

Transfer guide review The most time consuming part of the process Started in April 2015, completed in April 2016 CAO and counselors Counselors are faculty members Classroom faculty was solicited for input The most time consuming part of the process Using guides mainly from Grand Valley State University, Ferris State University, Northern Michigan University, and Western Michigan University. Focus on finding common courses Review of transfer guides for 39 different majors Transfer guide review

Broad Involvement of Faculty Transfer guide overview was shared with all full-time faculty requesting input Approximately 10% participation rate

Transfer Guide Consolidation Participants included full-time faculty, adjuncts, and administrators Selections yielded names and groupings for pathways All 39 majors were placed in a card sort Using common coursework Noting important exceptions Transfer guides were grouped and consolidated

Building a Pathway Catalog Developed using Acalog: http://catalog.Montcalm.edu All pathways publications include the following disclaimer: MCC Pathways are designed to be rough guides based on broad transferability to as many schools as possible. All students are still encouraged to work closely with the four- year institution of their choice to maximize transferability of courses. The MCC Pathways are not meant to replace transfer guides developed by four-year universities for specific majors.

Key Takeaways Define pathways in a way that works for your institution For us, that meant that we respected our existing occupational degrees, while offering more structure for the transfer degree However, the concept of pathways flowed down to occupational degrees as well, as we made sure job training programs, certificates, and applied associate degrees were aligned The fewer players involved from the start, the easier it is to build a framework Classroom faculty are often removed from the broad picture, but give valuable input on essential elements once the framework is developed

For Killing the Humanities and Arts at MCC

Expansion out of curriculum Pathways 2.0 Expansion out of curriculum

What is it? Looking at pathways through the entire college experience Focusing on processes Looking for "stopping out" points for students Do they make it all the way through the admissions process? Are they able to get finances in order? Are they successful academically? How can we better support our students?

Our Kumbaya moment Meeting of representatives for all departments that directly touch students during the process Student Services Financial Aid Business Office Placement Testing Orientation Counseling/Advising Process Mapping

Where are we now? Meeting happened early May Currently in limbo, but not (completely) forgotten...
