Human Reproduction Lesson 4

Reproduction The process by which new "offspring" individual organisms are produced from their "parents". It is a fundamental feature of all known life; each individual organism exists as the result of reproduction. There are two main types of reproduction: sexual and asexual. Asexual reproduction, an individual can reproduce without involvement with another individual of that species. The division of a bacterial cell into two daughter cells is an example of asexual reproduction. Most plants have the ability to reproduce asexually. Sexual reproduction, typically requires the involvement of two individuals, one each from opposite type of sex.

The Male Reproductive System

Parts and Functions of the Male Reproductive System Scrotum – sac of skin that holds testes. Hangs below body to keep testes cool. Testis/testes /testicles – male reproductive organ or the male gonads. Made up of small, coiled tubes – seminiferous tubules. Immature sperms are made here. It secrete testosterone Epididymis – storage area in upper rear of testis. Immature sperm move here to mature – takes 18 hours. Vas deferens – tube that leads upwards from each testis into lower part of abdomen from epididymis. Cowper’s gland – produces fluids that nourish sperm and protect them from the acidity of female. Combination of sperm and fluids – semen 6. Seminal vesicles – same job as Cowper’s gland 7. Urinary bladder – stores urine 8. Prostate gland – same job as Cowper’s gland and seminal vesicles 9. Urethra – passageway for excretion of urine and for sperm to leave body. Vas deferens empties into urethra 10. Penis – male reproductive organ. Facilitates internal fertilization
