Mountain Road by Paul Gauguin (Pol Go-gehn) Art Lesson Grade: 5 Activity: Tempera Landscape-Secondary colors Keywords: Primary and secondary colors and tint Supplies: -8” x 11” watercolor paper -paint plates for mixing color -small color wheels as a reference r--ed, yellow, blue and white tempera paint -small to med brushes -paper towels -cups of water to clean brushes -Artist Blurb -Colored construction paper Art Guide Prep: Make copies of Artist blurb Hands On Art: Objectives: Students will learn to mix primary and secondary colors Students will create a landscape with a variety of surprising colors Make sure the students do not focus on details in the landscape but rather a simple scene with mountain, sky, trees and water for example. Hand out 8” x 11” white construction paper one per student. Have the students write their name on the back before they get started. Have them sketch a simple scene from nature with their pencil. Hand out large brushes and two paper plates to be shared with a partner one with blue, yellow and red, the other with white which will be used for mixing their colors.  (Use about a tablespoon of each color.) Also, hand out the small color wheels as a guide to mix their colors.

Finish and Display: Examples: Go over the basic rules for mixing secondary colors from primary colors, for example ask them what they will get if they mix blue and yellow, and so on. Tell the students they are to paint a landscape with “surprising” colors. The sky should not be blue, but any other color will do. The grass could be purple; the water could be pink, and so on. Make sure that they fill their entire page with color in their scene. Make sure they understand they are mixing colors and using the white, if desired, to lighten or tint the primary and secondary colors they have mixed. Sign their name on front When their artwork is completed have them put in a safe place to dry. Finish and Display: Once the artwork is dry, volunteers can mount their work to 9” x 12” Glue artist blurb on the back of construction paper Hang outside classroom. Examples: Revised August 2014
