The First Year Review Process Rebecca Brennan

Consider it an informative ‘chat’

Who was it with and what did it involve? Two research staff members at your institute Normally have expertise that are relevant to your project Present your project to them – show off your knowledge! Chat about your work to date Discuss options for your future work Review your development 1.5 hour long maximum

How did I prepare? Wrote my first year report – literature review Organised my review session with my reviewers Gave a copy of my report to my reviewers two weeks before we met Prepared a presentation – 15 to 20 minutes long Practised my presentation Relaxed

My Presentation Layout Project Overview Include a timeline Project Aims Be clear Provide a breakdown Introduction Main section Show off your knowledge! Current lab work methods Explain your methods clearly Lab work results to date Key results Future work Structured breakdown

Tips and Advice Finish your report before the deadline – give your supervisors ample time to review it Print a copy of your report for your reviewers, and give it to them personally Contact your reviewers to organise your review date Prepare a 15 to 20 minute presentation – clear and concise Practise, practise, practise your presentation Understand your project Prepare to be asked about the future of your project
