Symbolism – notes

Objective To determine the figurative meaning of words and expressions.

Symbolism in everyday life! What is the symbol for your shoe or clothing brand? What is the symbol of your favorite team?

What is symbolism? Symbol – an object, a person or a place that stands for something else. Literal is the obvious or normal meaning. Figurative is beyond the literal. Literal meaning – It’s a flower Figurative meaning – love and romance

Let’s try another one Symbols are used in professional sports all the time Literal meaning – A lion Figurative – Strong, powerful king of the jungle

“Hungry enough to eat a horse.” For these three expressions we need to find the figurative meaning. “Hungry enough to eat a horse.” Figurative meaning- You are very hungry.

Try on your own: You will have 3 minutes to write what you think the figurative meaning of these phrases are. You will have 2 minutes to think pair share your answers with someone at your table.
