Migration Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. The movement may be just around a corner to a better house. How many of you have ever moved house? It may be from one part of the country to another in search of a job. Start with question – how many of have ever moved house? Technically most people in this room have migrated at some stage or another!

For many people country areas have very little to offer so they move to the towns and cities. This is called rural to urban migration

OR For many people a move to a different country holds many attractions. This is called international migration.

Immigration is the migration of people into an area. Emigration is the migration of people out of an area.

Why do people migrate? People migrate for two reasons: To get away from things that they do not like. These are known as push factors. People are attracted to things that they do like. These are called pull factors.

Activity! Identify Push and Pull factors using the images displayed on the following slides: Push Factors  And Pull Factors  Push Factors  Pull Factors 

Push factors...

Can you think of any others? Push Factors  Pull Factors  Can you think of any others? Get pupils to come up with a few of their own. Allow them to come and write on the board. Sort cards – what would be the main push/pull factor in the following situations.

James’ family came from Texas to NY as his local school had closed down. This is rural/urban migration. Abdul’s family came from Pakistan to the UK before he was born. This is international migration. This is Dylan. His family moved from Ipswich to London as his father had found a better job. This is economic migration.

Jasmine’s family are travellers Jasmine’s family are travellers. They often spend the winter in New York and the summer working in LA at the theme park. This is temporary or seasonal migration. This is Mariam. She was from Bosnia, but her family fled to the UK for a safer home for their children. The family fled as refugee’s.

Activity! Imagine you are a migrant from one of the pictures You have just arrived in London What ‘pushed’ you from your home country? What ‘pulled’ you to the UK?
