Different Operating Systems CS101 Different Operating Systems

Software Software is a set of instructions for the computer to follow to accomplish a task. Operating System = Set of instructions that controls all hardware and software on the computer

Reasons For Other OS’s Security = Move away from herd Some software only runs in certain OS’s Can make upgrading OS’s less scary Access to OS’s specific features and apps

Four most popular current desktop operating systems 1 Windows 2 Macintosh OS X 3 Linux (we use the Ubuntu version in lab) Ubuntu (you can try before you install) 4 Chrome OS (Not the web browser. Usually on a Chromebook.)

Ways to use different OS’s Multi-Boot Computer Use On Old Outdated Computer Virtual Computer

Multiple Boot Computer What is it? You create multiple partitions on your hard drive. You install different operating systems on different partitions. Pick out which OS to use when computer starts up,

Multiple Boot Computer Pros: Fastest way to run another operating system. Good for gaming Cheap (Linux is free). Can run less popular operating system on your computer to access the Internet more securely. Can run Windows only software in a Mac. Cons: Partitioning a drive is risky (make sure to have complete backup in place before attempting). Need to reboot computer to use other operating system. Need a Windows license. $

Multiple Boot Computer How is it done? (Warning: Have a complete backup before you partition your drive.) Putting Windows on a Macintosh computer. Get Windows with license. Run the Apple Boot Camp Assistant program located in the Utilities folder. It will step you through the process of installing Windows. Putting Mac OS on a Windows computer. Not legal to do. Putting Ubuntu on a Windows or Mac computer follow directions here: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-desktop

Install OS On Old Computer What is it? You can take an older Mac or Windows computer and give it new life by installing a different operating system.

Install OS On Older Computer Pros Great way to use an older computer that is considered unusable. Can buy a cheaper, older computer instead of a new expensive one. OS is free. Increased security. Cons None

Install OS On Older Computer How is it done? Putting Ubuntu on an older computer. Follow Ubuntu directions here: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-desktop

Virtual Computers What is it? You install software that allows you to create virtual operating systems on your computer. You can then run multiple operating systems on your computer at the same time. You can create as many virtual operating systems as you have room on your hard drive.

Virtual Computers Pros: Cons: No need to reboot computer to use other operating systems. Can use less popular operating system to access Internet for more security. Can access Mac/Windows at same time as virtual OS. Do not need to partition hard drive. Cons: Slower way to run another operating system. Not as good for gaming May have to pay for virtualization software.

Virtual Computer On A Windows or Mac How is it done? First you install the virtual software Parallels Desktop $50 - 80 VMware Fusion $50 - 80 VirtualBox $Free Then create new virtual operating systems. Open and run as many operating systems as your computer is capable.

Easiest and Free Way To Install Ubuntu on Windows or Mac Download and Install Virtual Box Download Ubuntu image Ubuntu Run Virtual Box and install Ubuntu as guest OS Install Guest Additions

Feel free to bring your computer to the second half of any of my labs for help installing other operating systems.
