Breaking the Code

What are the differences and similarities between the cards and Mendeleev’s Periodic Table?

Where’s Cu (copper)?

Where would you put Cu (copper)?

What do you notice about the atomic weight as you move from Calcium (Ca) to Gallium? Are there elements on Mendeleev’s table with atomic weights between those of Ca and Ga? Where might you put these elements in your cards?

PURPOSE You will examine your own periodic table of the cards in greater detail. You will then translate that understanding to the modern periodic table. You will work with a poster of the cards or the cards themselves and a modern periodic table.

Question to keep in mind…. How can you predict properties of elements using a periodic table?!

SUMMARY Elements in the same column have similar properties. Exceptions to the patterns: Why is it called a “periodic” table?
